“The Light Has Come"
1 John 2:3-11
Verse of the Week
Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
1 John 2:5
The Big Idea
We should grow in obedience, love and forgiveness so that our confidence in our relationship with God will grow.
How can we be sure that we truly belong to Christ? This is a question that many believers struggle with. John tells us in this passage how we can really know that we belong to Christ and know that we are truly saved. We don’t have to walk around with a question mark over our head. We can walk around with an exclamation mark. We can know! One way we can know if we belong to Christ is if we keep His commandments. John tells us that if we say that we know Jesus and do not keep His commandments then we are a liar and Jesus isn’t really in us. So this brings us to another question.
What are we commanded to do? John tells us in the answer later in 1 John 3:23. He says “And this is His command: to believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as He commanded us.” So we get 2 commands: Believe in Jesus and to love one another. How are we commanded to love someone? Especially the people that have hurt us or that get on our nerves. The answer to loving someone is to understand the love that Jesus has for us. When you have received and understand the Gospel, it should produce a response. God loved you so much that He died for you! Even while you were a sinner, Christ laid down His life for you. People are messy and loving messy people isn’t easy. The truth is, we (you) are messy too and Christ still loves (us) you. This should make us want to love others.
In addition to obeying Jesus’ commands, we are told in verse 6 that we can know we are in Him by living as Jesus did. Jesus’ life was a life of obedience to God, serving (loving) others and forgiving others. To live as Christ did, we must obey his teachings, follow his example of complete obedience to God, lovingly serve people, and by forgiving others. How can we do this? Again, you have to go back to the Gospel. Obeying, loving, serving and forgiving is what Jesus came to do for you. Realizing this gives you the power and the motive of doing this for others.
So back to the question of how can we be sure that we truly belong to Christ? The simple answer is LOVE. Loving God and loving people.
In your present situation, how can you be obedient to God?
It’s evident that a believer will love others, do you find it easy to love people?
How are you actively loving God?
How are you actively loving people?
What is your next step of obedience? What is the last thing that God has told you to do?
