“Renew, Restore and Rebuild ”

Nehemiah Chapter 4

Verse of the Week

After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”

Nehemiah 4:14

VS 1-3

Nehemiah was a Jewish man who was a cupbearer (butler) to the king of Persia.  Years before Nehemiah was even born, Jerusalem was attacked and conquered by the Assyrians, Babylonians and then the Persians.  The city of Jerusalem was destroyed including the temple and the walls surrounding the city.  Nehemiah had gotten word about the city walls and he was burdened by the news.  Nehemiah began to pray and ask God to work and also to use him to rebuild the walls.  God answered Nehemiah's prayers and Nehemiah began to rebuild the walls in Jerusalem.

As soon as Nehemiah began to make some progress rebuilding the walls, he began to get mocked and threatened by other governing officials.   Just like Nehemiah, we have an enemy.  Our enemy is Satan.   Anytime we take next steps to carry out the mission of God, we can be certain that Satan will attack.   How do we fight against him?  We are told in Ephesians 6 to put on the full armor of God and to pray.  This is exactly what Nehemiah did.

VS 4-12

Another way Nehemiah fought against his enemy was that he surrounded himself with other people that were a part of the mission.  Nehemiah had community to support him, help him rebuild and ready to fight with him.  We were not made to do the Christian life alone.  We believe that real life changes happen in community.   Community provides encouragement, accountability and support.  When the enemy attacks we need others to fight on their knees for us and with us.

Renewing, restoring and rebuilding always comes at cost and it takes effort.  The cost was paid for by Jesus.  He came on a rescue mission to  renew, restore and rebuild our relationship with God.  As He does the work, He wants us to join in with him.  It can be hard at times.  It can be messy but it’s worth it.  As we rebuild with Jesus as our foundation, He promises to always be with us and fight for us.
