JOHN 20

Verse of the Week

Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God, and your God.”  [John 20: 17]

Big Picture

We must hear, understand, and believe in that empty grave in order to receive peace, purpose, and eternal life.

Main Points

  1. The Resurrection Gives Peace for Those Who Believe
Mary was crying, looking for Jesus, but she couldn’t find him. But it was alright, Jesus knew where she was and he found her. Only one person could say her name like that. John 10:27 says this, “ My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” The Spirit of God. No one can come to the Father unless the Spirit draws them. Jesus gives us peace in John 6:44 when he says, “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.” In a chaotic world, this is what we need. Peace with God gives us the ability to have peace with man. Mary was weeping when she could have been praising. Jesus can speak peace into our troubles. Jesus knew her heart was broken and her mind was confused. He didn’t rebuke her, he gently revealed himself to her. In all her grief she couldn’t see the Lord and Jesus spoke her name. Of all the things that our enemy can rob us of, peace is chief on his priority list! Talk about digging a whole so deep you can’t find Jesus. Jesus has done what it took to find you. “As she was looking for Jesus, Jesus had already found her”. Jesus has done what it takes to find you. He knew right where she was and He knows right where you are even in the middle of your trouble so no matter what you’ve done come to him and receive peace.

  2. The Resurrection Gives Purpose for Those Who Believe
“You’ll be with me forever soon, but for now go and tell people”. John previously believed in Jesus’ identity. Now he believed in His resurrection. Notice that Jesus chose a woman to announce his resurrection. In this time the credibility of a woman’s testimony wasn’t considered credible but Jesus came to change the game. Jesus was sent on mission, and we are sent on His mission. They had a message to declare that was greater than that of the Law. Jesus is alive. Listen, If your afraid of letting God down, of letting others down, that you won’t be enough. Don’t worry you have never been enough but Jesus came out of that grave and proved that he has always been and always will be enough. If Jesus is the real deal, he’s the one person we can’t afford to shut out. If you say you believe then stand firm on the Resurrection and live your life for His purpose and on His mission.

  3. The Resurrection Gives Life for Those Who Believe
Life is found in Christ alone. Evidence can convince the mind, but it can’t change the heart. Evidence leads us to the Word of God. The word of God and the Spirit of God change the heart. You see Jesus spoke to Mary, that's a personal relationship.  Jesus spoke and they saw him. Mary was let down, but all she had to do was turn around and there he was (repentance). Do you want to be raised? It’ll only happen by believing in Him. Everyone wants eternal life but I’m saying you can have real life now. Everyone wants a ticket to heaven missing that it’s an invitation to experience life on earth as well as heaven. It’s not about not getting hell, it’s about getting Jesus Christ.
