“God Gave"

[Part 1]

Isaiah 9:1-7

Verse of the Week

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Isaiah 9:6

Isaiah 9:1-7

700 years before Jesus came, the prophet Isaiah prophesied that He would come and the mission for why He was coming.  Why did He come?  As we walk through verse by verse of the passage, Isaiah tells us:

Verse 1 tells us that He came to take us from gloom to glory.  He came from Galilee to reach the nations.

Verse 2 tells us that came to take us from darkness to light.

Verse 3 tells us that He came to make worshipers among nations and to bring joy.

Verse 4 tells us that He came to break burdens and bondage.

Verse 5 tells us that He came to defeat our enemies.

Verse 6 tells us that even though He came as a baby, He came to rule and reign!  He came as our counselor, our God, our father and our peace.

Verse 7 tells us that what He started, He will finish.

Everything that Isaiah told us that Jesus was going to do came true.  He came as a baby. He lived a perfect life that you or I could not live.  He died the death that you and I deserved to die.  He took our punishment and gave us His righteousness. God did this because He loves us and wants to have a relationship with us. We can have everything Isaiah promised by simply putting our trust in Jesus as savior and Lord.  As you celebrate this Christmas season, remember it’s not just about a baby in a manger. It’s about a King who came on a rescue mission.

Discussion Questions:

  1. In verse 6, Jesus is called Wonder Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace. Which encourages you most? Which gives you the most hope?  Why?

  2. Are there any areas in your life that Jesus does not have complete rule and reign?

  3. When we are rescued by Jesus, we become part of the rescue team.  Who is someone that you can tell about Jesus that needs rescuing?

  4. What is your next step with Jesus?
