Week 1

2 Kings 4:1-7

Verse of the Week

"When all the jars were full, she said to her son, "Bring me another one." but he replied, "There is not a jar left." Then the oil stopped flowing."

2 Kings 4:6

Main Idea:

God doesn't need resources, He just needs room. Make room.

1. The widow was in a place of desperation

The widow reached a place of desperation where she had nowhere else to reach except for the Lord. In desperation before the Lord is a good place to be and to live from. Her place of desperation led to surrendering all she had to the Lord and He multiplied it. When we surrender all before the Lord He will grow us but our circumstances don't have to lead us to a place of desperation. We can seek to remain their on our own. We have to start surrendering and seeking the things of God. As we do and we begin to see Him working in our lives and the lives of others it will fuel our faith and show us the importance of being in a place of desperation before the Lord. When we truly understand our weakness and depend on the Lord for His strength and stop leaning on our own strength we will truly see the wonder and work of God. "But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Corinthians 12:9

2. The widow had to participate in the work of God

Elisha had a heart to help the family. These prophets could call down fire from heaven, so in a blink surely they could have fixed the problem. But that's not how it works. What God calls us to requires faith and faith requires action. If it doesn't move us to action we don't truly have faith in it. The widow had to go and get the empty jars. Elisha didn't just fix all of her problems for her. You're not called to fix everyones problems for them. Their journey is not your responsibility. We are called to love and lead them to the God who can fix, remove, and heal. But for God to fix, remove, and heal we have to have the humility to ask for help. Both from our Christians brothers and sisters and from God. We come before God broken and desperate depending completely on Him for His provision and then we get up and go to work for His purposes. We all have a part to play and a way to help in the mission of God going forward. Breakthrough happens on the other side of your spirit led next step.
